Teachers can use their knowledge of teaching second language learners and their knowledge of sheltered instruction and SIOP to promote the language and literacy development and content knowledge of their students.

Students have developed knowledge of how to promote ELLs language and literacy development in their regular classroom. They are positioned to learn the strategies from SIOP to support the development of ELLS content knowledge along with literacy and language skills.

Instructions:

  1. .Read Chapters 3& 4 from Echevarria, J., Vogt, M., & Short,D. (2008).Making content comprehensible for English learners: The SIOP ModelPearson. (or the edition your district is using).
  2. As you read, fill in the answers to the questions provided in the reading guide linked here.
  3. Submit your worksheet to the teacher by next class period,
  4. Be prepared to share with your colleagues something you tried based on your reading or new learning you developed. Link reading guide
